Ninja Road Biking

Ben models Daddy's ninja hood...aka balaclava.

Lately Brian has been taking every opportunity to get out on his road bike before the roads are completely covered in ice and snow. Last summer (2007) he rode all the time to train for the Tour de Tahoe - Bike Big Blue ride around the lake....72 miles of torture if you ask me. He somehow managed to talk his parents, his brother (Chris) and sister-in-law (Emily), and Uncle Roger and Aunt Janet into joining him. I was able to play the pregnancy card and avoid the ride since I was about 6 months into my Sam belly era. Ben and I were the moral support.

This summer (2008) Brian didn't get out to ride nearly as much. A lot of that had to do with not getting much sleep as we worked through the agony of a sleepless infant. But Brian's making up for it now.

The thing about Tahoe is that even though the days may be warm and sunny in September and October, the nights and mornings are downright COLD! Brian is prepared of course with covers for his shoes, insulated biking gloves, and his ninja mask. It's really one of those balaclava things to keep your head/face/neck warm. But as one of our friends put it, "Don't have Brian stop by a convenience store to pick up anything on his way home from a ride or they might think he's gonna hold the place up."

Brian is an early riser and likes to workout before he has breakfast and heads to the office. He usually starts his bike rides as the sun is coming up. This isn't unusual for a lot of people but seriously, how many people would willingly go out to ride their bikes up an 8900' mountain in 26 degree weather?

By the time Brian got home this morning he had been gone for about an hour and the temperature had risen to a toasty 27 degrees. He was bundled from head to toe and had a fine layer of frost all over the ninja mask where his sweat had accumulated. Just seeing him gave me chills. Then he picked up his water bottle and gave it a shake....ice rattled.

I forgot to mention that we had snow here the two days prior to Brian's ride this morning.
